Author Submissions Sought
We at Issaries, Inc. want professional authors to submit material for
Hero Wars. We need writers who can turn in a professional manuscript
on time.
Single authors are preferred. You can work with others, but we want to communicate
directly only with one responsible party. If you work with other authors, each will
need to complete an Author's Release form, and will need to understand that the
primary author will be responsible for all content and contracts.
Originality Encouraged
We want you to make up some new facts and lore about Glorantha. The material may
be original as long as it does not conflict with official material, published or
unpublished; and as long as it conforms to the general world of Glorantha. Expect
to work with us to make sure material fits within the larger Hero Wars
campaign that we are developing.
Take a look at the available material, keep the scale and Campaign in mind, and
feel free to do whatever details are fun. How far can you go? Well, you can make
up almost any deity you want, up to a minor god, known or worshipped in a limited
area. You can add a minor race or creature that no one has heard about, as long
as it is relevant to the story (and not just a new monster to fight) and does not
interfere with published information about its homeland. Feel free to add subcults
to existing deities, factions to existing nations and cities, and local geographic
features.
We cannot guarantee that we will accept your new creations, but if you follow these
guidelines you will be on the right track.
The Most Important Thing is the Story
Hero Wars is a storytelling game, and we have designed it to make it
easy to write story guidelines for the narrator to use in play. Issaries, Inc.,
seeks good stories to share that are particular to the world of Glorantha. The best
stories will use some curious or colorful part of Glorantha, will pit individuals
against risks with dangerous consequences, will include hints to guide the player
heroes out of their dilemma, and will give enough information to impose consequences
when they fail.
The story ought to have a beginning, middle, and end. We expect that many stories
will have multiple segments that require several sessions to complete, but please do
not attempt to write a complete story arc (containing several stories) without
discussing it with us first.
Please submit:
A letter to
with a brief proposal. Include a resume of your publication accomplishments and
an indication of your familiarity with Glorantha.
We will reply to you and possibly discuss clarifications, changes, or options to
your proposal. We will have to work with you to coordinate your proposed events
with the greater Hero Wars timeline. These ideas will be shared with
other contributors and our panel of Gloranthan experts. Limits or expansions may
be made. Agreement must be reached.
If we agree, we will work out a deadline, pay rate, and check points for the task
so that you can get underway. We then expect you to write the manuscript according
to the word count and agreed-upon contents, and to submit it by the deadline.
Drafts of the work in progress will be accepted, and on occasion may be required
to demonstrate progress and ensure that there are no problems with the contents.
How About Just Part of a Book?
We recognize that different authors have different strengths, and we wish to work
with you on that basis. So yes, if you have only a part of a book, or a single
story, please let us know.
Please remember, however, that often many people wish to write definitively about
a single subject. Issaries, Inc., reserves the right to assign projects as we see
fit, and we intend to reward whomever does the hardest work with these plums. Thus,
we have seen a dozen or more versions of the Tusk Riders, but the person who sends an
actual scenario interacting with them is more likely to be published than someone
who merely expresses interest in writing about them.
What If I only have Bits and Pieces?
Bits are fragments, not a whole story or plot, and include such submissions as a
profession, a regional character type, a creature, an interesting place, or a way
to address certain game problems.
We invite you to send such bits to appear online. We have a large selection of fan
submissions there, and we expect and hope that many of them will one day end up in
Issaries books, in one form or another. If you send your bits to our online site,
we will review them, then put your suggestion into an area where you can share it
with everyone.
What About Payment?
Issaries will pay authors a one time rate ranging from 1 cent per word (for works
derived from published sources) to 3 cents per word (for completely original work
that we will need to edit heavily) to 5 cents per word (for excellent original
prose that needs little or no editing).
What About Editors?
Project editors, text editors, and copy editors are often needed, often on short
notice. If you are one such who may be available, please let us know. However, we
currently have editors and readers on staff or contract, so please understand if we
do not contact you immediately for such projects.
OUR HOTTEST NEED:
Regional Books
256 pp.
Text: 70,000 words
Content: 1/3 local politics, geography, and history; 1/6 story arc and
everyday activities; 1/2 adventures.
Regional books need to:
- Provide colorful and fun details on the region, suitable for traveling
through and providing background for the scenarios. (around 24,000 words, or
1/3 of book total)
- A story arc for 1621 to 1630. A story arc is a sequence of events,
opportunities and ideas for a local campaign, and includes everyday activities
of the locals, such as raid (if any), law suits, and so on; and incorporate the
Major Events which occur in this place and time. (around 12,000 words, 1/6 total
book)
- Major Event Scenario, being a heroquest to help resolve or worsen the epic
events of the Hero Wars. (around 36,000 words, 1/2 total book)
Player's Books
256 pp.
Text: 70,000 words
See Thunder Rebels as an example. Players books need to include:
- Native point of view and attitude, this always being "we are the best."
Perspective is to talk excessively about ourselves, always favorably, ignore
our weaknesses, and to slag off other peoples.
- Character generation for the region, sufficient to give details and fun
facts about possible hero characters. Format must follow Hero Wars
and Thunder Rebels, using comparable keywords and cult affinities.
- "How to Play a X" section which includes colorful details on how to
interface and exploit the rules with the characters, such as exploiting magic,
unusual weapons, and so on.
- Background, which will offer snippets of mythology and prospects of the
greater heroquests.
- A heroquest that is available to people who are detailed in the book.
What is the Schedule?
Issaries would like to publish a series that alternates between player's books,
regional books, and other books (atlas, gods and goddesses, fiction, etc.). Look
here for the current list of planned books.
In fact, however, we will cheerfully publish any good and complete book when it is
done, regardless of where it may fall in this series.
